The Language of Opportunity

Master the terminology of Rank & Rent, EMD strategy, and SERP analysis. These are the concepts that separate amateurs from professionals.

Core ConceptsMetrics & MeasurementsSERP FeaturesStrategiesTechnical Terms

A

Aggregator Site
Technical Terms

A platform that collects and displays service provider information from multiple sources, such as Thumbtack, Viator, or Fresha. Unlike directories, aggregators actively optimize their pages and compete for rankings, so they are treated as real competitors in EMD Striker's analysis.

AI Overview
SERP Features

Google's AI-generated answer box that appears at the top of search results for many queries. AI Overview synthesizes information from multiple sources, often satisfying the user's query without requiring a click. EMD Striker applies a significant penalty when AI Overview is present as it reduces organic click-through rates.

B

Barnacle SEO
Strategies

A strategy of attaching your business to high-ranking 'Soft Targets' like Yelp or Google Business Profile to capture traffic and leads. Rather than trying to outrank directories, you optimize your presence on them. This can complement an EMD strategy while the new domain builds authority.

C

CPC (Cost Per Click)
Metrics & Measurements

The average amount advertisers pay for each click on their Google Ads for a given keyword. A high CPC ($5+) means businesses are paying real money for those clicks, which is what makes a keyword worth ranking for Rank & Rent or lead generation. Google's CPC figure is reliable at higher search volumes but often reads as $0 for long-tail local keywords that advertisers do bid on. EMD Striker therefore reads CPC alongside the top-of-page bid, and only caps a Striker Score at 30 when neither signal clears its threshold: CPC below $0.50 and a top-of-page bid midpoint below $2 (or no bid data at all).

Top-of-Page Bid

D

Directory Site
Technical Terms

A website that lists businesses by category and location, such as Yelp, Yellow Pages, BBB, or Angi. Directory pages often rank for local keywords due to high domain authority but typically have thin, auto-generated content. EMD Striker classifies these as Soft Targets and awards bonus points when detected.

Domain Rating (DR)
Metrics & Measurements

A metric (0-100) measuring the strength of a website's backlink profile. Originally from Ahrefs, DR indicates how authoritative a domain is based on the quantity and quality of other websites linking to it. EMD Striker uses DR to identify weak competitors (DR < 20) and assess soft target authority.

E

Exact Match Domain (EMD)
Core Concepts

A domain name that exactly matches the search query a user types into Google. For example, 'austinplumber.com' for the search 'austin plumber'. EMDs historically provided a ranking advantage and remain particularly effective for local SEO where the domain signals direct relevance to the search query.

F

Fold Height
Metrics & Measurements

The pixel line where users must begin scrolling to see more content, typically around 600-800 pixels depending on device. Content 'above the fold' is visible without scrolling. In modern SERPs filled with ads and features, organic results often appear below the fold despite high rankings.

SERP Visualizer Feature

G

Geo-Permutation
Strategies

The process of systematically combining service keywords with city or location modifiers to generate hundreds of keyword variations. For example, combining 'plumber' with 'Austin', 'Dallas', 'Houston' creates 'plumber austin', 'plumber dallas', 'plumber houston'. EMD Striker's Geo-Permutation engine automates this process with optional modifiers.

Niche Discovery Feature

L

Local Pack
SERP Features

The map-based box showing 3 local businesses that appears for queries with local intent. The Local Pack appears prominently on SERPs and draws significant clicks from users seeking local services. EMD Striker detects Local Pack presence and applies a penalty as it competes with organic listings.

Local Signals
Technical Terms

Elements on a webpage that indicate local relevance, including NAP (Name, Address, Phone) information, embedded maps, service area pages, and local content. EMD Striker analyzes competitors for missing local signals and awards bonus points when absent.

P

Parasite SEO
Strategies

The practice of leveraging high-authority third-party platforms (Reddit, Medium, LinkedIn, Quora) to rank for keywords. These 'parasite' pages rank by domain authority alone. When EMD Striker detects parasite pages ranking, it indicates an opportunity as these can often be displaced by dedicated, optimized content.

Pixel Depth
Metrics & Measurements

The exact vertical pixel location of a search result on the SERP, measured from the top of the page. A result at pixel depth 1200 means users must scroll past 1200 pixels of content (ads, Local Pack, AI Overview, etc.) before seeing that result. EMD Striker calculates pixel depth to determine if 'ranking #1' actually means being visible.

SERP Visualizer Feature

R

Rank & Rent
Strategies

A business model where an SEO professional builds and ranks a website (typically an EMD) for local service keywords, then rents the leads generated to local businesses. The website owner retains ownership while charging a monthly fee for the phone calls and form submissions the site generates.

Rank & Rent Solution

S

Schema Markup
Technical Terms

Structured data code (usually JSON-LD) added to web pages that helps search engines understand the content. LocalBusiness, Organization, and Service schemas are particularly important for local SEO. EMD Striker detects missing schema markup as a competitor weakness and awards bonus points.

Soft Target
Core Concepts

A high-authority domain ranking in search results with low-relevance or unoptimized content. Examples include Yelp directory pages, Facebook business pages, LinkedIn profiles, and Reddit threads. These sites rank by domain authority alone - not keyword optimization - making them easier to displace with a properly optimized EMD.

Soft Target Detection Feature
Striker Score
Core Concepts

EMD Striker's proprietary composite metric (0-100) that quantifies the probability of a new website displacing current top-ranking results for a given keyword. Unlike traditional Keyword Difficulty (KD), the Striker Score analyzes SERP vulnerability including soft targets, content quality, pixel depth, and commercial intent. Higher scores indicate easier ranking opportunities.

T

Thin Content
Technical Terms

Web pages with minimal text content, typically under 500 words. Thin content often indicates directory listings, placeholder pages, or low-effort competitors. EMD Striker awards bonus points for each ranking competitor with thin content.

Title Mismatch
Technical Terms

When a ranking page's title tag doesn't contain the target keyword or closely related terms. Title mismatch indicates poor optimization and suggests the page ranks by authority rather than relevance. EMD Striker awards bonus points for each competitor with title mismatch.

TLD (Top-Level Domain)
Technical Terms

The extension at the end of a domain name, such as .com, .net, .org, or country-specific codes like .co.uk or .com.au. For local SEO, country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) can signal geographic relevance. EMD Striker suggests appropriate TLDs based on target country.

Best TLD for Local SEO
Top-of-Page Bid
Metrics & Measurements

The bid range Google reports for showing an ad at the top of the first page for a keyword, given as a low (20th percentile) and high (80th percentile) figure. It comes from the same auction as CPC but is reported for far more keywords, including long-tail local terms where CPC shows $0. Roughly half of local keywords have no bid data; EMD Striker shows those as a dash and does not penalize them. When both numbers are present, the bid range is the better read on what advertisers actually pay for a local keyword, and CPC is the better read on high-volume terms. EMD Striker uses the midpoint of the range as a second commercial signal beside CPC: a keyword passes the commercial gate if either the bid midpoint is $2 or more or the CPC is $0.50 or more.
